"The Folk Songs in Japan"

Speaking of “folk songs”, it usually means traditional songs in the world.
We Japanese also use the folk songs to express our traditional songs, but we often say so for songs that a singer plays the acoustic guitar as well.
Because the American folk songs were very popular in Japan in the 1960s and 70s, and those songs were all the rage here at that time.
Many young Japanese people were eager to have the acoustic guitar to sing the American folk songs.
After a while, some Japanese singer-songwriters appeared and their songs were also called the folk songs.
We enjoyed both of the American folk songs and Japanese ones.
That is why songs that a singer plays the acoustic guitar are called the folk songs in Japan.
